About Muna Kalati

Muna Kalati (MK) is an award-winning edtech company that specializes in developing educational resources that positively shape the identity of African children, empowering them to be confident critical thinkers and global champions. We created the Muna App, the first Afrocentric app with storybooks, audiobooks, and animated videos (songs, lullabies, rhymes, etc.) specifically designed for African children. We enable African publishers of children's books and creators of educational resources for children to distribute and monetize their products via our platform.

Through the app, children can learn 39 African languages, such as Twi, Yoruba, Igbo, Swahili, etc. The Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) results indicate that reading and learning outcomes can be improved if children have appropriate texts to practice reading skills in their mother tongue.

With a strong focus on SDG 4 and SDG 17, we have a network of over 2153 early childhood specialists in Africa, including illustrators, cartoonists, writers, and publishers of children's books.

MK also has about a decade of experience providing training and professional development opportunities for content creators of educational resources for children since this is a sensitive period of human development.

We aim to ensure that every African child grows firmly rooted in their cultural identity. We believe that quality early childhood education, through culturally relevant content, would contribute to a greater understanding of Africa and facilitate the development of better solutions to existing crises (identity, corruption, poverty, etc.).

We value innovation, collaboration, and excellence. Innovation is vital because creativity and adventure are central to everything we do. We love collaborating with governments, publishers, writers, investors, development partners and teachers because we can only go far if united. We have collaborated with Google, UNICEF, UNESCO, AfDB, Siemens Stiftung, BnF, Ghana Book Development Council (GBDC), Ghana Publishers Association etc. on ECD projects. Excellence, finally, is our minimum standard, and the MK Team is known for their high level of professionalism, mastery and commitment, which are essential, especially when working with children, the most critical season of human capital development.

We always say that the best moment to change a story is at the beginning. Thus, the best way to change the African narrative is to start with children, and that’s why we are always excited and passionate when serving them through our various initiatives.

The Story Behind the App

Muna Kalati, after 7 years of dedication to the promotion of African children's books through research, documentation and advocacy, wishes to respond to a crucial need: the absence of a centralized platform for distributing and monetizing African children's books limits access for young readers, contributing to a poor understanding of their cultural heritage and hindering efforts to improve their foundational literacy skills. This gap hinders access to work and limits distribution and sales opportunities. To remedy this, Muna Kalati has launched the development of a mobile and web application.
